Course Information

Provide First Aid course covers a broad range of topics to enable participants to confidently manage emergency situations and provide a first aid response to a casualty. It is suitable to both people in workplaces and members of the public who want training in first aid.

Award Issued

Statement of Attainment in HLTAID003 Provide First Aid and is a stand alone unit. It incorporates competencies in: HLTAID001 Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation

The course certificate is valid for 3 years and the Australian Resuscitation Council recommends that you attend a resuscitation update every 12 months. Each student will be given the certificate immediately after completion of the course.

Who Should Take This Course?

The unit applies to workers who may be required to provide first aid across a range of complex situations, include community and workplace settings.

Pre-requisites

The Foundation Skills described those required skills (language, literacy and numeracy) that are essential to performance.

  • Oral communication – in order to make an accurate verbal report to supervisor and emergency response services.
  • Written communication – in order to complete a written incident report in line with operational requirements of the business
  • Physical requirement; healthy to perform CPR/ practical (e.g : not a post-trauma patient on rehabilitation)

20 Hours (14 hours home study + 6 hours practical session)

What Will You Learn?

  1. Respond to an emergency situation
    • Recognise an emergency situation
    • Identify, assess and manage immediate hazards to health and safety of self and others
    • Assess the casualty and recognise the need for first aid response
    • Assess the situation and seek assistance from emergency response services
  2. Apply appropriate first aid procedures
    • Perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in accordance with Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) guidelines
    • Provide first aid in accordance with established first aid principles
    • Display respectful behaviour towards casualty
    • Obtain consent from casualty where possible
    • Use available resources and equipment to make the casualty as comfortable as possible
    • Operate first aid equipment according to manufacturer’s instructions
    • Monitor the casualty’s condition and respond in accordance with first aid principles
  3. Communicate details of the incident
    • Accurately convey incident details to emergency response services
    • Report details of incident to workplace supervisor as appropriate
    • Maintain confidentiality of records and information in line with statutory and/or organisational policies
  4. Evaluate the incident and own performance
    • Recognise the possible psychological impacts on self and other rescuers involved in critical incidents
    • Participate in debriefing to address individual needs

Our Delivery Strategy

Presentation by trainer will follow the HLTAID003 Provide first aid session plan and course syllabus. Practical component of Performing CPR and other first aid techniques will focus on working through case scenarios using the DRSABCD technique; this will be done as individuals and in pairs. Precourse assessment questions will be completed individually prior to the course and used to prompt questions for discussion by the group.

Delivery & Resources

Delivery of the course is by home study mode with students completing pre-course work covering material contained in the RSFA Home Study Manual workbook (HLTAID003 Provide First Aid), followed by face-to-face practical session.

Assessment

Assessment will be conducted using a range of methods including case scenarios, questioning, written assessment and practical skills demonstration, assessment strategies will be based on the principles of consistency, fairness, validity and reliability. To gain a statement of attainment in HLTAID003 Provide first aid participants will have to achieve competency in:

  • Pre-course Assessment: workbook style in which student must gain 100% and may be verbally re-assessed.
  • Practical assessment: Participation in group and individual scenarios Demonstration of the first aid treatments in line with ARC guidelines.

Cost

The cost is $70.00 and is offered few times a week in our Sydney venue.
The $70.00 cost includes your nationally accredited certificate, workbooks and registration fees.
Schools and university students are entitled for $60.00 concession rate.
The fee for a Refresher course is $60.00.
